[Sakura Viewing Information] A Special Feature on Famous Sakura Spots in Toyama

It’s almost spring in Toyama, and we’d like to introduce you to some of the spectacular cherry blossom, or sakura, viewing spots in each region. Strolling through the rows of cherry blossoms in full bloom with the backdrop of the blue skies, or enjoying them at night as they’re illuminated both have their different charms. We hope this guide will serve as a reference during your next trip.
 

The Toyama City Area

  • Sakura in Matsukawa

    Sakura in Matsukawa

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from late March to early April

    A promenade has been constructed along the Matsukawa River, which flows through the city center, where approximately 530 sakura trees are lined up for a total of 3.9 kilometers, making this a popular walking route when the trees are in full bloom. Depending on when the flowers are in bloom, they are lit up, allowing you to enjoy night views as well.

  • Fugan Canal Kansui Park

    Fugan Canal Kansui Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Usually late March to mid-April

    At Fugan Canal Kansui Park, in addition to viewing and taking walks under the sakura, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the flowers and the Tateyama Mountain Range from the observation tower, which is also illuminated at night. There are various ways to enjoy the sakura here at Fugan Canal Kansui Park, including a canal cruise provided by the Fugan Suijo Line.

    [Toyama City] The Suiboku Museum, Toyama

    [Peak Viewing Period] Usually late March to early April
    The red weeping cherry tree in the courtyard is the symbolic tree of The Suiboku Museum, Toyama. It has been selected as one of the 70 best cherry blossom viewing spots in the prefecture. The view from the museum is breathtaking, with the rows of cherry trees along the left bank of the Jinzu River and the Tateyama Mountain Range in the background! For a limited time only, the cherry blossoms are lit up at night.
     

The Takaoka, Imizu, and Himi Areas

  • [Takaoka City] Takaoka Kojo Park (Takaoka Castle Ruins)

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from late March to mid-April
    The ruins of Takaoka Castle, built by Toshinaga Maeda, the second head of the Kaga Maeda family, are located almost in the center of Takaoka City. With around 1,800 sakura trees of eighteen varieties planted, the area is known as a famous viewing spot, and has been named one of  “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.”
     

  • [Takaoka City] Iwasakinohana Lighthouse

    [Peak Viewing Period] Late March to early April
    The contrast of the blue sky, blue sea, white lighthouse, and pink cherry blossoms seen from the hill is breathtakingly beautiful. If the weather is fine, the snow-capped peaks of the Tateyama Mountain Range can beyond the sea.
     

  • [Imizu City] The Shimojo Riverbank

    [Imizu City] The Shimojo Riverbank

    [Peak Viewing Period] The beginning of April
    Approximately 600 Yoshino cherry trees are planted along both banks of the Shimojo River stretching for around 2,700 meters, and you can almost feel the slow flow of time as you stroll and gaze at the sakura above.
     

  • [Imizu City] Uchikawa

    [Imizu City] Uchikawa

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    You can enjoy sakura trees that stretch for about 600 meters on both banks of the Uchikawa River, along with the "Azuma Bridge" covered with a gabled roof spanning the Uchikawa River. In addition, there’s the "Hojotsu Bridge," which gives you a sense of the historical romance of the Muromachi period, and. you can also view the sakura reflected on the water from a sightseeing boat.
     

  • [Imizu City] Taikoyama Land

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    Taikoyama Land is a park with beautiful nature that has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Urban Parks in Japan.” In Taikoyama Land, there are 1,300 cherry trees planted, including Yoshino cherry trees. The row of sakura trees from the front entrance to the west exit is especially beautiful.
     

  • [Imizu City] Yakushojiike Park

    [Imizu City] Yakushojiike Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    Cherry blossoms have been planted in the "Waterside Plaza,'' "Sakura Slop,e', and "Multipurpose Square'' within the park, and you can enjoy the sakura in your own way. This could include the reflection of the flowers on the pond, the flowers from below as you sit in the plaza, or from the opposite bank of the pond.

  • [Himi City] Asahiyama Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    This park is located on a small mountain at an altitude of about 42 meters, overlooking the city of Himi, and here you can enjoy the sakura swaying in the spring breeze. At night, the soft light of the paper lanterns illuminates the flowers, giving you a sight unlike that of the daytime as the elegant scenery shines in the night light.
     

The Tonami, Oyabe, and Nanto Areas

  • [Tonami City] Shogawa Gorge

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from early April to mid-April
    The Shogawa Gorge is a place where you can enjoy the contrast of "mountains," "rivers," and "sakura," which is rare even in Japan. The illuminations begin as the sun goes down, and the magical sight of cherry blossoms at night will soothe your soul.

    Enjoy the harmony of mountains, rivers, and sakura at Shogawa Gorge.
     

  • [Tonami City] Arayashiki Shibazakura (Moss Phlox) Festival

    [Peak Viewing Period] Late April to early May
    The vivid pink color is eye-catching and beautiful even from a distance. Please enjoy it together with the Tulip Fair. The carpet of moss phlox, which expands year by year thanks to the enthusiasm of local residents, is a must-see.

     

  • [Oyabe City] Shiroyama Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    Shiroyama Park, where Imaisurugi Castle once stood, 600 Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom from early April to mid-April, and the Shiroyama Sakura Viewing Festival will be held. Also, paper lanterns are lit at night, allowing you to enjoy the beautifully illuminated sakura at night.

     

  • [Oyabe City] Kurikara-kentei Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from late April to early May
    An old battlefield where the Minamoto Clan’s military commander, Kiso Yoshinaka, achieved great victory through the use of the “fire bulls,” where torches were attached to the horns of bulls who stampeded through their adversaries. Approximately 6,000 yaezakura trees are in full bloom from late March to early May. Also, the “Kurikarasan Yaezakura Festival” is held during this time, and it is crowded with many visitors who come to see the blooms.
     

  • [Nanto City] Mukaino no Edohigan

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from late March to mid-April
    This is a large Edohigan cherry tree that grows wild along the Yamada River. After sunset, the sakura are illuminated and have a different atmosphere than they do during the day.

     

  • [Nanto City] Fukumitsu 1000 Sakura

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from late March to mid-April
    Sakura trees have been planted along a total of two kilometers along both banks of the Oyabe River, which flows through the center of the town of Fukumitsu. They are lit up at night, and you can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere different from that of the daytime.

    [Nanto City] World Heritage Site Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Village

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from mid to late April
    Even while snow remains, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and you can feel the arrival of spring and the end of winter at the same time. You can see flowers along with the Gassho-zukuri houses that are registered as a World Heritage Site, creating scenery that truly feels like the original landscape of Japan.
     

The Uozu, Namerikawa, and Kurobe Areas

  • [Uozu City] Uozusogo Koen Mira Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from early April to mid-April
    Uozusogo Koen Mira Park is rich in nature, as it's surrounded by rivers and the sea, and it has a variety of facilities such as an aquarium, a park golf course, and Mirage Land. In spring, 350 Yoshino cherry trees and Satozakura trees are in full bloom.

     

  • [Uozu City] The Matsukura Castle Ruins

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in late April
    When you climb the stairs leading to the castle ruins in the spring, the entire area is colored with wild sakura, and it is so spectacular that it has been selected as one of the "Top 50 Cherry Blossom Spots in Toyama.'' You can enjoy the tranquil sakura befitting of the castle ruins.
     

  • [Uozu City] Shinkawa Manabi no Mori Tenjinyama Exchange Center

    [Uozu City] Shinkawa Manabi no Mori Tenjinyama Exchange Center

    [Peak Viewing Period] Usually from early to mid-April
    The Shinagawa Manabi no Mori Tenjinyama Exchange Center is located on a hill in Uozu City, offering a panoramic view of the cherry blossoms and the landscape of Uozu. Near the facility is the Hana-no-Mori Tenjinyama Garden, where visitors can also enjoy spring flowers such as peonies.

     

  • [Namerikawa City] Hamanasu Park

    [Namerikawa City] Hamanasu Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Usually early to mid-April
    Hamanasu Park is adjacent to the roadside station, Wave Park Namerikawa. During the cherry blossom season, the "Firefly Squid Luminescence Show" is also held at the Firefly Squid Museum. Please enjoy the firefly squid and cherry blossoms that herald the arrival of spring in Toyama.
     

  • [Kurobe City] The Miyanoyama Sakura Festival

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from early April to mid-April
    A park with a panoramic view of Toyama Bay and the cityscape stretching across the Kurobe River alluvial fan. Approximately 800 sakura trees are in full bloom, and during this time, the road lined with trees resembles a pink tunnel. It’s also lit up at night during the festival.
     

  • [Kurobe City] The Sakura Embankment of the Kurose River

    [Kurobe City] The Sakura Embankment of the Kurose River

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly around April 10th
    There are 150 red weeping cherry trees and a symbolic cherry tree that is over 100 years old located on the 660-meter-long bank of the Kurose River estuary. The best time to see them is around April 10th, which is a little later than the time for the Yoshino Cherry trees.

     

  • [Kurobe City] Hyakunen Sakura (Former Mikkaichi Elementary School)

    [Kurobe City] Hyakunen Sakura (Former Mikkaichi Elementary School)

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in April
    This cherry blossom tree was purchased by Masatami Morioka, a new teacher, with his starting salary in 1907, and the tree was planted on the grounds of Mikkaichi Elementary School. Unlike other Yoshino trees where guessing their age may be difficult, the age of the day is clear down to the year it was planted, which was fairly long ago.

    [Kurobe City] Unazuki Onsen

    [Peak Viewing Period] Mid-April to late April
    Blooming about one week later than the trees found in the plains, Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom all over the hot spring town. You can enjoy the contrast between fresh greenery and cherry blossoms that can only be seen at this time of year.
     

The Kamiichi, Tateyama, Nyuzen, and Asahi Areas

  • [Kamiichi Town] Oiwagawa Water Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from early April to mid-April
    Oiwagawa Water Park, located in Oiwachi, in the town of Kamiichi, allows you to enjoy a walk around Oiwasan Nisseki-ji Temple and its temple street, as well as trekking on Mt. Jogahira.
     

  • [Kamiichi Town] Kamikyoden Central Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Early April to mid-April every year
    Kamikyoden Central Park is a popular local park where play equipment and toilets are available.
     

  • [Kamiichi Town] Sakka Enchi

    [Peak Viewing Period] Early April to mid-April every year
    It is located in the Sakka area of "Tsurugi Kirameki no Mori'' the forest therapy base, and you can take a walk along the toga tree-lined approach to Ganmokuyama Ryusen Temple.
     

  • [Kamiichi Town] The Left Bank Plaza of Iori Bridge

    [Kamiichi Town] The Left Bank Plaza of Iori Bridge

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly around mid to late April
    Mt. Tsurugi seen through the blooms of cherry blossom trees is a spectacular view, and you can also see the late-blooming variety of sakura known as "Omoigawa.''

     

  • [Tateyama Town] Joganjigawa Park

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly from early April to mid-April
    Joganjigawa Park, located on the riverbed of the Joganji River, is a popular spot for sakura viewing in spring. The blossoms will be illuminated at night, so please go and see them.

     

  • [Nyuzen Town] Sakura on the Kurobe River Embankment

    [Peak Viewing Period] Yearly in early April
    Yoshino cherry trees were planted by local residents in the mid-Showa period, and currently, there are 170 trees stretching approximately 1.2 kilometers. There are waterways and sidewalks beside the row of trees, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent view of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range.
     
  • とやまビューポイント「あさひ舟川 の 春の四重奏」

    [Asahi Town] Cherry Trees Along the Funakawa River

    In early February, sakura, tulips, nanohana flowers, and others bloom in the rows of sakura trees along Funakawa River and the surrounding area, against the backdrop of the snow-covered Asahi and Hakuba Mountain Range, allowing you to enjoy a colorful quartet of spring.
