Winter Exclusive! All about the illuminations in Toyama

Illuminations in Japan are often a winter-only phenomenon that bring that extra special touch to the chilly season.

Sweet Illumination (Toyama City)

■Date: Usually held from early October to the end of February of the following year *Event schedules varies each year

"Sweet Illumination" is a wintertime staple of Kansui Park. In addition to the festive lights carpeting the park's iconic Tenmon Bridge, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking sight of a shining white tree set in the middle of the Fountain and Waterfall Plaza water feature, with lights cascading down towards it from the surrounding area.

White Illumination Toyama (Toyama City)

■Date: Usually held from December to the end of January of the following year *Event schedules varies each year

■Hours: 17:00 - 22:00

Toyama City is illuminated with colorful winter lights starting around December. Light poles and a light tunnel with vibrant color variations are installed in the plazas in front of Toyama Station South and North Exits. This relaxing spot is recommended not only for couples, but also for families and friends.

Takaoka Great Buddha (Takaoka City)

■Dates: Open all year round

The Takaoka Great Buddha is one of the three great Buddha statues in Japan, following Nara and Kamakura. It was created using the best of traditional copperware manufacturing techniques, standing an impressive 15.85m tall and weighing 65 tons. When illuminated, this majestic piece of art casts a completely different impression to its daytime appearance.

Machinaka Winter Illuminations (Takaoka City)

The Machinaka Winter Illuminations are an annual event in which the arcade and plaza in front of Takaoka Station are blanketed in approximately 80,000 brilliant illuminations.

Il Mirage UOZU (Uozu City)

■Dates: Usually from December to February of the following year *Event schedules varies each year
■Hours: 17:00 - 24:00

Centered around the rotary in front of the station, illuminations titled "Uozu, the city of dreams", "Uozu, the heart-warming city", "Mirage on a winter night", and "Il Mirage UOZU" will light up Uozu in winter. Enjoy the illuminations twinkling in the crisp winter air.

Illumination in Himi (Himi City)

■Dates: Usually from late November to the end of February of the following year *Event schedules varies each year
■Hours: Sunset - 23:00

The 2023 theme of “Expectations” conjured up an exciting atmosphere that allowed visitors to reflect on their deepest wishes and dreams. The stunning LED "Milky Way," which had only been visible on the mountain side of the Nakanobashi Bridge until 2022, was expanded in 2023 to both the mountain and ocean sides of the bridge, creating a flowing river of brilliant light.

Tulip Park KIRAKIRA Mission (Tonami City)

■Hours: Sun - Thu: 17:00 - 21:00, Fri & Sat: 17:00 - 22:00

Who says flowers are just for summer? Now you can also enjoy beautiful blooms in the middle of winter at this wondrous light display! Approximately 100,000 flower-shaped lights illuminate this pretty park and the surrounding area, including the grand Tulip Tower. The display is set up by citizen volunteers in a heart-warming act of winter cheer.
Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to view the grounds. Please enjoy the illuminations with your partner, family and friends!

Oyabe Illumi (Oyabe City)

■Hours: 17:00 - 21:00

View a fantastic sea of light and a light dome, walk through an illuminated tunnel, and enjoy the “zoo” illuminations full of cute animals! These romantic illuminations make for the perfect winter evening excursion.

Twinkle Night in Imizu (Imizu City)

■Dates: Usually from mid-November to mid-February of the following year *Event schedules varies each year
■Hours: 17:00 - 24:00

A brilliantly romantic illumination event in which beautiful lights envelop the city of Imizu. See various illuminations glamorously light up the clear winter night sky, transporting visitors into a fantasy world.

Cross Five Illumination (Asahi Town)

■Dates: Usually held from mid-November to the end of February of the following year *Event schedules varies each year
■Hours: 18:30 - 23:00

Gosaro Cross Five is a complex that houses the Mamenake Market, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Council of Social Welfare, a bank, and other facilities.
On winter nights, colorful illuminations brighten up the facility, shining through the cold winter air. Festive illuminations also greet visitors at the rotary in front of Tomari Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway.
