In addition to the early morning auctions which occur at most fish markets, at the fishermen’s wharf in Shinminato, afternoon auctions also start at 1 p.m. Everything at auction is caught on the same day, so the freshness is outstanding. Pouring into Shinminato’s sea are the Shogawa and Oyabe Rivers, whose headwaters are located in the mountainous regions of Hakusan and Hida. The waters pick up various minerals as they flow down through primeval forests, and create a rich marine environment in Shinminato that produces healthy and nutritious fish and shellfish. The fishermen of the area work to protect this blessed environment and fish sustainably in order to maintain marine resources while bringing in delicious catches.
