Takaoka Mikurumayama Museum 高岡御車山会館
Immerse yourself in the color and craftsmanship of the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival
Every year on May 1, seven ornate, carved wooden floats are paraded through the streets of Takaoka during the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival, an event that goes back around 400 years. Visitors can see some of the actual floats and learn about the festival year-round at the Takaoka Mikurumayama Museum. Get a closer view of the art and craftsmanship that goes into making the floats, including metalwork, lacquer work, and tapestry. Experience the festival at the 4K high-definition theater, which uses motion-capture technology to make the audience feel like they are riding one of the towering floats. Other interactive exhibits replicate the experience of being a festival musician or an operator of one of the floats’ mechanical dolls. The museum also has a shop selling Takaoka copperware, lacquerware, and other traditional crafts.
