Ensho-no-Yakata 塩硝の館
Learn about one of Gokayama’s major industries of the past – Ensho
Ensho-no-Yakata is a valuable place which conveys the lifestyle of the villagers’ ancestors to the people of the present and teaches about an industry of old.
This museum provides an exhibition about the manufacturing of Ensho (an ingredient of black gunpowder), which was once the greatest industry of Gokayama back in the Kaga Domain of the Edo period. It is an annex to the adjacent Gokayama Folk Musuem.
The processes from production to shipment have been reproduced with simplicity in the doll corner and shadow puppetry corner.
Why not take a look back in time to the way the craftsmen of yesteryear went about their trade in the magnificent natural surroundings of real country Japan?
