One of the most spectacular sights on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Mikurigaike Pond is one of the most iconic sights on the Murodo volcanic plateau. Created by an eruption about 10,000 years ago, Mikurigaike is renowned as the most beautiful volcanic pond in the North Japan Alps. It has a circumference of 630 meters and a depth of 15 meters. The swaths of Japanese stone pines that grow around the pond are home to birds known as rock ptarmigans.

Mikurigaike Pond is usually covered in snow all the way through June. Between the months of July and October, the majestic mountains are reflected on the pond’s deep blue surface creating a stunning image. Travelers in autumn can also enjoy beautiful seasonal foliage surrounding the pond. The unforgettable beauty of the lake and the wider alpine area will linger in your heart long after your visit. Mikurigaike can be reached by foot from Murodo Station, on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
