Making your own kumiko, a traditional craft
The kumiko is a traditional craft that has been refined over centuries since the Asuka Period (592-710). The craftspeople at Tanihata use this intricate traditional craft, consisting of grids of wood created without nails, to make frames for ranma (an opening between the ceiling and sliding door in traditional Japanese rooms), Japanese style partitioning screens, and other partitions. You can even make your own kumiko in Tanihata’s factory. Try this traditional craft for yourself – it’s easy!
