Toyama Prefectural Itai-itai Disease Museum 富山県立イタイイタイ病資料館
Teaching future generations about Itai-itai Disease
This facility will be temporarily closed from April 18th to May 6th to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Itai-itai Disease was one of the Four Big Pollution Diseases of Japan, occurring in the basin of the Jinzu River in Toyama as a result of cadmium poisoning caused by mining in the area. “Itai-itai” means “it hurts, it hurts” in Japanese, named for the cries by the sufferers of the disease. In this museum you can learn about this terrible disease and how the region overcame it. The museum delivers a powerful message about how important the environment and our health are for our quality of life. Seeing these people’s immeasurable pain with your own eyes will leave you with an even stronger resolve that an incident like this must never happen again.
